Diet for CKD

Diet for Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

A kidney-friendly diet is crucial for managing CKD. Since the kidneys cannot filter waste properly, eating the right foods can help control fluid, protein, and mineral levels in the body. At Superfood & Nutrition, we believe in creating simple, balanced meals that support kidney health while keeping you energized.

Key Guidelines for CKD Diet

⚖️ Low Protein Intake– Too much protein can burden kidneys. Choose controlled portions of eggs, fish, or paneer, or plant proteins like dal (limited).

🧂 Low Sodium (Salt) – Reduces swelling and controls blood pressure. Avoid pickles, chips, packaged foods.

🥛 Controlled Potassium & Phosphorus– High levels may harm the heart and bones. Limit bananas, oranges, tomatoes, potatoes, nuts, cola, dairy (unless advised).
💧 Fluid Control – Follow doctor’s advice on how much water/fluids to drink daily.
🌱 High Calories from Safe Sources – Use rice, bread, healthy oils (olive, rice bran, sunflower).

Sample 1-Day CKD Diet Plan(For educational use only)

☀️ Early Morning (7:00 AM)

* 1 cup rice kanji / barley water
* 2 soaked almonds (if potassium levels are in control)

🍚 Breakfast (8:30 AM)

* 2 idlis with chutney (avoid tomato/coconut if potassium restricted)
* Herbal tea (no milk, no strong caffeine)

🍎 Mid-Morning (11:00 AM)

* 1 small apple / guava (avoid banana, orange, mango)
* 2 biscuits (low salt)

🥗 Lunch (1:30 PM)

* 1 cup white rice / chapati (limit whole wheat if phosphorus restricted)
* 1 small cup bottle gourd curry (lauki)
* 1/2 cup dal (limited, well-cooked, discard first boiled water to reduce potassium)
* 1 tbsp ghee or olive oil

☕ Evening Snack (4:30 PM)

* Rice puffed snack (murmura)
* Weak tea with sugar (no milk, or very little)

🍲 Dinner (7:30 PM)

* 2 chapatis or 1 cup rice
* Ridge gourd curry / tinda curry (low potassium veg)
* Small piece of grilled fish / boiled egg white (if allowed by doctor)

🥛 Before Bed (9:30 PM)

* 1/2 cup warm milk (only if your potassium and phosphorus are under control)

⚠️ Important Notes:

* Salt substitutes (like low-sodium salt) are dangerous for CKD (they contain potassium) → avoid.
* Avoid high-potassium foods (banana, orange, tomato, potato, spinach).
* Limit dairy, dry fruits, and nuts (high in phosphorus).
* Always check with your nephrologist/dietitian before following a plan, as diet varies by dialysis type, blood reports, and stage of CKD.
